LAS VEGAS — A grand jury in Las Vegas indicted Deobra Redden, 30, for attempted murder after he leaped over a judicial bench and assaulted a Nevada judge during a sentencing hearing. The attack, captured on courtroom video, prompted widespread outrage and concerns about courtroom safety.

Grand Jury Indicts Defendant for Violent Assault in Las Vegas Courtroom

Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was moments away from delivering Redden’s sentence in an attempted battery case on Jan. 3 when he lunged over the bench at her.

Courtroom cameras recorded the shocking incident as Holthus’ clerk and a court marshal struggled to restrain Redden in a video that quickly went viral on the internet and social media platforms. A week later, Judge Holthus sentenced him to up to four years in prison for the battery charge he had pleaded guilty to in November.

Indictment Allegations:

The grand jury’s nine-count indictment against Redden includes charges of attempted murder and assault. The indictment accuses Redden of attacking Holthus by grabbing her, pulling her hair, placing his hands around her throat, and hitting her on the head. Additionally, he is accused of assaulting a Las Vegas police officer.

Legal Representation and Mental Health Concerns:

A lawyer who represented Redden at the initial hearing did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Redden’s foster mother, Karen Springer, and older sister, LaDonna Daniels, informed reporters outside court last month that Redden has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, although court records show he was found competent to stand trial.

Criminal History:

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated that Redden’s adult criminal history included convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors, primarily involving violent acts.

The incident highlights the need for increased security measures and mental health support within courtrooms to ensure the safety of judges, court staff, and the public.
