Renowned education reformist and environmentalist, Sonam Wangchuk, has entered the 15th day of his hunger strike in Leh, Ladakh. His protest, aimed at advocating for statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh, has garnered widespread attention and support.

The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) has announced a half-day general strike on March 20 in solidarity with Wangchuk’s cause. Despite sub-zero temperatures, Wangchuk remains resolute in his ‘climate fast’, emphasizing the urgency of addressing Ladakh’s pressing issues.

Wangchuk’s demands center around four key points:

  1. Statehood and Constitutional Safeguards: He advocates for Ladakh to be granted statehood status and urges the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which ensures protections for land and a degree of autonomy for tribal areas.
  2. Separate Representation: Wangchuk calls for separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts, emphasizing the distinct needs and identities of these regions.
  3. Recruitment Process and Public Service Commission: He seeks a separate recruitment process and establishment of a Public Service Commission tailored to Ladakh’s requirements.
  4. Protection of Ecosystem: Wangchuk raises concerns about Ladakh’s vulnerability to industrial exploitation, stressing the importance of preserving the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Expressing disappointment with the central government’s response, Wangchuk accuses them of breaching trust and failing to fulfill promises made to the people of Ladakh. He appeals to the international community for support, highlighting the need to uphold democratic principles and restore basic democracy in the region.

Wangchuk’s determination is unwavering as he continues to advocate for Ladakh’s rights and urges global solidarity. He calls upon individuals worldwide to observe a day of fasting and raise awareness on March 24 in support of Ladakh’s cause.
